Facts and Highlights
Hollin Hills was designed
as a variation of the Hollin Hall Plantation, owned by General
Thomson Mason,
the
son of George Mason, a founding
father. General Mason named his lands after an English
estate of his mother’s family. Some of the Hollin Hall
plantation buildings are still in existence on Sherwood Hall
Lane.
Hollin Hills was the first neighborhood in the Washington Area
comprised solely of contemporary houses.
The 225 acre tract of land was purchased in a courthouse auction
by Robert Davenport, and developed by Davenport and the Rodman
Brothers.
Charles Goodman was the architect. The development began winning
awards for its architecture shortly after the first homes were
completed in 1950.
Trees were retained, building details determined by the contour
of the land, and a landscape plan designed as an integral part
of each structure.
Some street names in Hollin Hills were chosen by Robert Davenport
to compliment the community name. Others were named after members
of family. For example, Martha Road was named for his mother,
and Rebecca Lane for his daughter. Elba road was actually named
after one of his prize bulls!
The last Hollin Hills home on Kimbo Street was finished in May
of 1971, which completed the 463-home community.
