Hollin Hills offers a true “sense of community” with
an active Citizen’s Association, a “Neighborhood Watch” operated
by volunteers who patrol the streets throughout the day and evening,
resulting in a very low incidence of crime. There are foot trails
that encourage meeting neighbors while hiking or biking as well as
a community swimming pool and tennis courts.
The Hollin Hills Design
Hollin Hills defies Robert Frost’s notion that “good
fences make good neighbors.” There are no fences in Hollin
Hills. Architect Charles Goodman designed each home so that no resident
intrudes on the privacy of another. Trees and shrubbery block the
sight lines and loosely define lot lines, eliminating the need for
obstructive fences.
In planning the community, Architect Charles
Goodman gave priority to back yards and private spaces. The simple
and elegant houses,
were designed with dimensions based on four-foot modular units so
size and form could be easily manipulated, and the cost minimized.
Architect Goodman and builder Robert Davenport won more than a dozen
awards for the design of Hollin Hills, including Parent magazine’s “Best
Home for Family Living,” and the prestigious American Institute
of Achitects’ “Test of Time Award.”
Resident Longevity
Most of today’s residents have lived in Hollin Hills many years
(some are still the orginal owners!), choosing to add-on to their
homes to accommodate the needs of expanding families, rather than
leaving this community’s unique lifestyle for larger quarters.
An active Architectural Review Board ensures that additions preserve
the integrity of the original design and the community’s continuity.
Activities
Hollin Hills residents enjoy outdoor living and the many nearby parks
offer opportunities for a wide range of activities, including:
Tennis
Fishing
Boating (including boat rental)
Indoor Ice Skating
Swimming
Biking
Within the 30 acres of community parks in the area, there are picnic
areas, volleyball field, and playgrounds for children. The bicycle
path, which winds its way along the Potomac River from the Mount
Vernon Mansion all the way up to Cabin John, Maryland, allows everything
from leisurely pedaling, to a challenging 25-mile course.
